Collective leadership: Why it is so urgent in education

In a new opinion piece for District Administration, Leading Educators CEO Chong-Hao Fu argues that the current moment of uncertainty in education demands collective leadership and systemic reform to build an education ecosystem that is effective, innovative, and responsive to every learner’s needs.
Citing successful generational work in Chicago, Baltimore, and Tennessee, he argues that the path to better outcomes lies in evidence-based action focused on true transformation. He also highlights ways in which genAI offers new possibilities for authentic learning and reimagining the teaching profession.
He proposes four priorities:
- Fund cross-sector partnerships to replicate successful models.
- Invest in professional development to equip educators to teach durable skills like creativity, leadership and collaboration.
- Embrace AI-enhanced instructional strategies to strengthen teaching and engage students in real-world learning.
- Redesign the teaching profession to ensure sustainability, collaboration and impact.
